The Public Health Research Institute of Southern California is a charitable non-profit corporation with the mission to improve the health of Americans by identifying modifiable aspects of environments and behaviors that can be used to mitigate risk for developing diseases.   Unique to this organization, the aim is to prioritize partnerships with affected communities in order to strengthen the acceptability of public health interventions and  improve the  long term efficacy of positive findings.

The Institute prioritizes community-based studies and the evaluation of interventions.  Evaluations utilize mixed methods approaches , benefiting from in depth qualitative methodology and epidemiological design.   Southern California is a unique environment to investigate these determinants of disease because of diversity in the demographic populations, urban/suburban environments and rich community activism.

Currently, the research priority areas include older adults, health behaviors, environmental pollutants ,and  built environments.   These targeted research areas involve both  extensive environmental measurements and behavioral assessment in order to promote health.
